Floyd Mayweather vs Marcos Maidana News: Robert Garcia Believes Maidana Has Perfect Style To Beat Floyd Jr.

Marcos Maidana will be a heavy underdog in his May 3 showdown with Floyd Mayweather Jr., but trainer Robert Garcia believes that his fighter has what it takes to pull off an upset.
In an interview with BoxingScene, Garcia said that Mayweather has faced great fighters in his first 45 fights, but no one had the same style as Maidana.
“Mayweather has never fought an opponent like Maidana. He’s has had good opponents. Miguel Cotto, Oscar de la Hoya, Canelo Alvarez, but not one of them has the style of Chino, which is difficult because of the way he punches,” Garcia said.
The 2012 Trainer of the Year also reiterated his previous statement that even the best boxers before tasted defeat during their prime.
Garcia pointed out that boxing greats like Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard lost before, not because their opponents were better than them, but because their opponent’s style was tailor made for both fighters.
“Ali is the best ever and he’s had defeats, Sugar Ray Leonard lost, so it is not impossible,” Garcia said of defeating Mayweather. “It is the styles that make fights. Duran beat Leonard because of his style, not because he was better than him, and the style of Chino is perfect to get an upset.”
Maidana, who is coming off a big win against Adrien Broner in December last year, vowed to train harder than before to have a good chance of handing Mayweather his first defeat.
“I know I’m in a difficult fight and beating Mayweather is no small task, so we are training hard on speed, technique, and defense,” Maidana said. “I’m focused on improving everything so we have more chances to win.”
Maidana admitted, though, that his performance against Broner will not be enough to defeat Mayweather, but he confidently said that it’s time for the reigning pound-for-pound king to absorb his first setback.
“I also know that I cannot measure my chances by what happened with Broner, because Mayweather is much better than that,” Maidana stressed. “Everyone, at some point in life, we have to lose – and it’s time for him to lose. This is a fight that can change my career, but mostly my life.”

Mayweather vs Maidana News: ‘El Chino’ Confident He’ll Hit and Hurt Floyd Jr.

Marcos “El Chino” Maidana feels confident about his chances against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in their upcoming showdown on May 3 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
In an interview with BoxingScene on Tuesday, Maidana admitted that beating Mayweather will be a gargantuan task, but he believes he has the power to hurt the reigning pound-for-pound king, and possibly score a knockout.
“We all know he’s a great champion but I’m preparing well and every time I fight a good opponent and I catch him with a good shot I hurt him and I could knock him out. With Mayweather, I expect to catch him with a good shot and I feel I’m going to hurt him too,” Maidana said.
Maidana, who will put his WBA welterweight title on the line, will be a heavy underdog heading into Fight Night, but the 30-year-old Argentinian is unfazed, saying that he is used to being an underdog.
“Every time I come into a fight with a good opponent, I’m always the underdog, I’m never the favorite. But that doesn’t matter because I like to give surprises,” Maidana said.
Maidana is coming off an upset victory over then-unbeaten Adrien Broner in their title showdown in December last year. He was also a heavy underdog before the fight, but he managed to defy the odds, knocking Broner down in rounds two and eight en route to a unanimous decision win.
Boxing analysts believe that Mayweather and Broner have similar fighting styles, but Maidana pointed out that Mayweather is way better than Broner because of his speed and experience.
“I think Mayweather is much faster, walks the ring more and has more experience. They have a similar style but it’s not the same thing,” Maidana said.
Maidana also insisted that Mayweather made the right decision of fighting him instead of British boxing icon Amir Khan, saying that a Mayweather vs Khan showdown would have been a boring fight.
“I think Khan vs. Mayweather would be a very boring fight,” Maidana said. “They are both boxers and neither of them are going to attack, so that’s why I think it would be boring.”

Mayweather to Maidana: “We’re playing chess, not checkers”

Floyd Mayweather Jr. had a message for Marcos Maidana — be prepared to think once inside the ring at the MGM Grand Garden on May 3.
“To me, the sport of boxing is like a game of chess,” Mayweather said Tuesday at media day at his gym off Spring Mountain Road. “Every move has to be thought of. You don’t just make the move.
“In checkers, you can make reckless moves. In chess, you take your time and your moves are thought about. You study the board before you make your move. It’s the same in boxing. Before I make a move, I study my opponent and anticipate what he’s going to do before I make my move.”
Along with light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins, Mayweather, the reigning World Boxing Council welterweight champ, is one of the grand masters of boxing. He is constantly setting traps for his opponents, luring them in, then capitalizing on their mistakes. It’s a strategy that has made him 45-0 in his career with 26 knockouts.
As for how he’ll deal with Maidana, the World Boxing Association champ at 147 pounds who is 35-3 with 31 KOs, Mayweather, a 13-1 betting favorite, will be prepared and be ready to adjust.
“We had seven different sparring partners for this training camp, so we don’t know what style Maidana is going to bring,” he said. “When I fight, I fight the fighter. The same way you dish it out, you have to be able to take it. This is a give-and-take kind of sport.
“It’s about experience, being around the sport so long. This is what I’ve done my whole life. I’m able to make adjustments, just like I showed you in the Shane Mosley fight, just like I showed you in the Zab Judah fight. In the blink of an eye, I can make adjustments.”
Mayweather said he’s not sure who Maidana reminds him of.
“I can’t really say because I haven’t fought Maidana yet,” he said. “After I fight him, I can tell you who he reminds me of. I watched Maidana against Adrien Broner, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to fight me the same way because styles make fights.
“Me and Amir Khan are two totally different fighters. I like to take my time and be smart. Amir Khan is a straight-ahead kind of guy who can sometimes be reckless. It’s not always about hand speed. Adrien Broner’s a fast fighter. A lot of it is about timing. That’s the good thing about me. I have real good timing.”
As always, Mayweather has kept himself in tremendous condition. His father and lead trainer, Floyd Sr., said throughout the two months of preparation for Maidana, he could recall just one day where his son had an off-day.
“But the next day, he was back on track as if the day before never happened,” Floyd Sr. said.
Mayweather said with age comes wisdom, and at age 37 he understands his body’s limits and he knows when to step on the accelerator and when to back off. He also understands what it takes to get ready for a fight, and he never shirks his responsibilities to that end.
“I think I’m a little smarter,” he said. “I don’t have to run every single day. I don’t have to train every single day. I can take a day off if I need to and let my body recover. But I feel good. Training camp has been tremendous. I’m happy. My father’s happy. My team is happy. We’re ready to go out there and do what we do best, which is take our time and go out there and box.”
Mayweather said he still hasn’t fought the perfect fight, though many will argue his performance Sept. 14 against Canelo Alvarez was as close to perfect as it gets in boxing, judge C.J. Ross scoring the fight a draw aside.
“In 18 years, I haven’t brought my best out,” he said. “We’ll have to see this fight.
And he’ll be setting plenty of traps for Maidana along the way, just like any chess grandmaster would do.

Will Floyd Mayweather risk a fight with one of the young guns? Thurman and Porter breaking through at 147

Today’s welterweight division is almost ridiculously talented, with the 147-pound weight class being stacked with excellent fighters. Floyd Mayweather Junior is of course the king of the hill, and any fighter from 140 to 147 (and 154-pounds also) is gunning for that life changing payday. But 154 aside, Mayweather has more than enough potential challengers at welterweight.
Over the past few months, two welterweight young guns have really broken through and impressed: Shawn Porter and Keith Thurman. Both guys are talented, fast (Thurman especially) and powerful (Porter especially). Helping make an already exciting weight class that much more exciting – with top class operators Tim Bradley, Manny Pacquiao and (expected to move up from 140 any time now) Danny Garcia also fighting at 147 – Thurman and Porter have some people thinking they are capable of testing Floyd and testing him hard. But will Mayweather, who next faces the powerful yet slow-footed Marcos Maidana, an 11-1 underdog, risk a fight with one of the young guns who are hungry for the ultimate challenge?
After the 37-year-old megastar has dealt with Maidana, it is possible British star Amir Khan could be next (assuming Khan gets past the dangerous and hungry Luis Collazo this coming Saturday on the under-card in Las Vegas). Khan could still be classed as a young gun himself, being just 27-years-old, but in comparison to Thurman (25) and Porter (26), Khan, who has been around at the highest level for some time, is something of a veteran.
But, assuming it is Khan for Floyd after Maidana, who will “Money” fight in his final two fights in his six-fight contract with Showtime? We know we can rule out Manny Pacquiao, that story grew old, old, old years ago, and Mayweather shows no inclination of making a potentially historic middleweight title challenger (many fans would love to see Floyd fight a guy with the initials/nickname “GGG.”) So it has to be a young gun next, right?
Mayweather taking on the likes of Thurman, Porter or Garcia would please the fans and the execs at Showtime, but will Floyd take a potentially risky assignment against a young and hungry warrior who simply doesn’t know how to lose? Porter, compared by some to a mini Mike Tyson, has impressed with wins over Devon Alexander and Paulie Malignaggi, while “One Time” Thurman has taken out good fighters Carlos Quintana, Jesus Soto Karass and Julio Diaz. The two seem destined to meet (although Porter’s mandatory and expected July foe Kell Brook will have something to say about that) and, by the time that fight has rolled around, the winner would perhaps be ready for the ultimate challenge: that of taking away Floyd’s perfect record.
Of course, many more fans feel it doesn’t matter who Mayweather fights in his remaining bouts before retiring, as he will walk away unbeaten anyway. But if any fighter is to have a chance of beating the master, it figures it will be a man much younger and hungrier than Floyd, and one who also possesses speed comparable to Mayweather’s. It could be argued that no fighter exists, but another growing thought is one that suggests Porter and Thurman might just fit such a lofty bill in another 12 months or so.

It’s Mayweather-Maidana Fight Week! And there’s plenty more boxing action where that came from. Here’s the full schedule for this week, including live coverage for cards on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night.

Monday, April 28

FOX Sports 1, 8:00 pm EDT, Michael Perez vs Jorge Romero, Jayson Velez vs Miguel Soto, McJoe Arroyo vs David Quijano. Pretty standard FS1 card, this one from Puerto Rico.

Wednesday, April 30

BLH LIVE STREAM, 4:00 pm EDT, Mayweather vs Maidana main event press conference.
SHO, 10:00 pm EDT, Mayweather vs Maidana All Access (Episode 3).

Thursday, May 1

BLH LIVE STREAM, 4:00 pm EDT, Mayweather vs Maidana undercard press conference.
ESPN2, 9:00 pm EDT, Roberto Garcia vs Victor Cayo, Jonathan Gonzalez vs Rogelio Medina. FNF is back again on Thursday this week, as the NBA playoffs are slightly more important than mid-level boxing, but hey, at least we’re getting the show instead of an outright preempting of the series for a few weeks, so that’s good news. The greatest mystery about this show is if Jonathan Gonzalez will make weight, and if not, by how much he’ll miss. BLH will have live coverage.

Friday, May 2

BLH LIVE STREAM, 6:00 pm EDT, Mayweather vs Maidana weigh-in.
FOX Sports 1, 9:00 pm EDT, Ishe Smith vs Ryan Davis, Mickey Bey vs Alan Herrera, Rico Ramos vs Jesus Cuellar. This was supposed to be Erislandy Lara vs Ishe Smith, but Erislandy Lara is instead going to fight Canelo Alvarez, so Erislandy Lara wasn’t about to be dicking around on this show. The main event is a farcical matchup now, as Davis is absolutely nothing more than a club fighter, but the other two bouts are competitive on paper. That’s the good news. The bad news is that this is a show anchored on the entertainment value of Ishe Smith, Mickey Bey, and Rico Ramos, and, well, that’s not whatI’d advertise when trying to convince viewers to buy a PPV the next night, but what do I know? Nothing, that’s what! LEARN THE BIZ! BLH will have live coverage.

Saturday, May 3

ARD (DEU) / Sport 1 (HUN), 4:55 pm EDT, Arthur Abraham vs Nikola Sjekloca. Abraham is making a quick turnaround to defend his recaptured WBO super middleweight title. You may recall Sjekloca getting outclassed by Sakio Bika on Showtime last year.
SHO, 8:00 pm EDT, Mayweather vs Maidana Countdown.
SHO PPV (US) / BoxNation (UK) / Main Event PPV (AUS) / RPC4 (PAN), 9:00 pm EDT,Floyd Mayweather vs Marcos Maidana, Amir Khan vs Luis Collazo, Adrien Broner vs Carlos Molina, J’Leon Love vs Marco Antonio Periban. We will, of course, have a load of content this week as we cover everything to do with the fight leading up to bell time on Saturday night, when we will, of course, have live round-by-round coverage and immediate post-fight analysis for you for each bout on the show. BLH will have live coverage.
TyC Sports (ARG), 10:00 pm EDT, Cesar Cuenca vs TBA.
